QuickBooks Error 6073 and 99001: Practical Solutions

๐Ÿ› ️ QuickBooks Error 6073 and 99001: Practical Solutions

QuickBooks Desktop is designed to support multi-user environments, allowing multiple users to access the same company file simultaneously. However, when the file access configuration is incorrect or disrupted, users may encounter Error 6073 and 99001, which prevents the company file from opening.

Let’s explore the causes of this error and walk through practical, step-by-step solutions to fix it.

๐Ÿšจ What Is QuickBooks Error 6073 and 99001?

This error typically appears with the message:

“QuickBooks is unable to open this company file. It may have been opened by another user. Error codes: (-6073, -99001)”

It indicates that QuickBooks cannot access the company file due to a conflict in file usage or permissions—often in multi-user mode.

๐Ÿ” Common Causes of Error 6073 and 99001

  • The company file is open on another computer in Single-User Mode
  • The file is located in a read-only network folder
  • The file is being accessed via remote software (e.g., LogMeIn, GoToMyPC), and the host still sees the user as logged in
  • The file is hosted on a Linux server using multiple login credentials
  • The .ND (Network Descriptor) file is damaged or misconfigured

✅ Practical Solutions to Fix Error 6073 and 99001

Step 1: Close the File on Other Computers

  • Ensure no other user has the company file open in Single-User Mode
  • Ask all users to close QuickBooks
  • Reopen the file in Multi-User Mode from the host computer

Step 2: Use QuickBooks File Doctor

  • Download and install the QuickBooks Tool Hub
  • Open Tool Hub > Company File Issues
  • Run QuickBooks File Doctor
  • Select your company file and let the tool scan and repair it

Step 3: Check Folder Permissions

  • Navigate to the folder containing the company file
  • Right-click > Properties > Security
  • Ensure all users have Full Control permissions

Step 4: Disable Remote Access Software

  • If using remote desktop tools like LogMeIn or GoToMyPC:
    • Log out of the remote session completely
    • Restart the host computer
    • Try opening the file again

Step 5: Rename the .ND File

  • Go to the folder containing your company file
  • Locate the .ND file (e.g., YourCompanyFile.qbw.nd)
  • Rename it to YourCompanyFile.qbw.nd.old
  • Open QuickBooks Database Server Manager from Tool Hub > Network Issues
  • Scan the folder to recreate the .ND file

Step 6: Verify Hosting Settings

  • On each workstation:
    • Open QuickBooks > File > Utilities
    • If you see Host Multi-User Access, do nothing
    • If you see Stop Hosting Multi-User Access, click it

Only the server should host the company file.

Step 7: Restart QuickBooks Database Server Manager

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter
  • Locate QuickBooksDBXX (XX = version year)
  • Right-click and choose Restart
